Mali, which capital city is Bamako, is said to be one of the fastest growing cities in the world due to its booming in trade. Bamako lies across the flat plains to the north and south of the Niger River. As a country, Mali also provides an adventure in the western Saharan nation that you will not experience any other place. Mali has played an important role in great African empires of the past. It is a landlocked country bordered by other great African countries like Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Mauritania, and Guinea. The Bamako city is a major port, home to Mali's largest international airport and Railway. Mali's capital Bamako also has a center of activities like cultural, museums, zoo, botanical gardens, the Bamako Grand Mosque and the Cathedral of Bamako, which serves as tourist places and attracts many visitors to the country.
The importance of Mali continues to be displayed to this day. Visiting legendary attractions like the city of Timbuktu, the Djene mosque, and the Niger River will keep you busy. Timbuktu’s greatest contribution to civilization is learning and it is believed that some of the earliest universities in the world have been established here. Another group of attractions are: the imposing sight of the Niger River at Koulikoro and a trek down Dogon Country will capture your imagination. Evidence such as paintings on rocks and different carvings point to man’s early existence in the Gao and Timbuktu area, this will provide the traveler a history lesson to remember.
Sikasso city, a city in southern Mali, is now one of the most interesting tourist places though there are other group of tourist places like the Mopti, Kayes, Ségou , Sévaré, Kati and among others,because this city was the former capital of the Kenedougou empire, in the heart of Senoufo country, and Mali's green belt.It is in this same city that Mamelon, the residence of the former kings of Sikasso; and the Tata, remnants of a large palisade that encircled the city and for a time held off the French colonial army is found. Sikasso today is a centre for cotton ginning and textile manufacturing in Mali.
The surrounding region is a mixture of lowland valleys in the central area and flat-topped sandstone plateaus in the east and west. Much of the area is devoted to subsistence agriculture (sorghum, corn [maize], and rice); cash crops grown include cotton and tea. Large numbers of cattle are exported to Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), and gold is mined near the town of Kalana. The Bambara and Senufo peoples are the region’s main inhabitants.
There are a few other things that you can do in Bamako, Mali during your trip. One of the most popular things to do in Bamako, is shopping. The place is like one huge marketplace where you can buy goods and produce only found in Mali. There is one place where you can buy Mali souvenirs for all of your family and friends back home—the Le Marche Rose. You can buy many different types of souvenirs in this marketplace—from masks to jewelry and other local crafts.
Also you can experience watching films in Bamako’s local cinemas. The cinemas are all over Bamako, where you can watch both international films and local cultural films.
Just like other African countries, you will need to obtain a visa when visiting Mali, which are available at the border for a fee, for those entering from the other towns of the country by land. Those visiting Mali by flight can apply for visa from the respective Malian embassies in their country. The hot months run from October to February, very hot months, April through June. There are only two months of “wet” weather here in Mali and they are July through August.
